Coconut & Coconut oil the key to ethical massage therapy

The Importance of Choosing the Right Massage Oil & asking your therapist what oil they are using in your massage. This is Ethical Massage Therapy

Massage therapy offers numerous holistic benefits, including the release of endorphins, which enhance feelings of pleasure and safety while reducing stress and anxiety. However, the effectiveness of a massage can be compromised by the type of oil used during the session. It is essential to check with your massage therapist about the oils they use, as many conventional products may contain harmful ingredients.

Good Oils vs. Bad Oils

When considering massage oils, it's crucial to differentiate between those that promote health and those that could pose risks -

Good Oils:

  • Coconut Oil

  • Sesame Oil

  • Flaxseed Oil

  • Jojoba Oil

  • Sweet Almond Oil

  • Avocado Oil

  • Grapeseed Oil

  • Olive Oil

  • Argan Oil

Bad Oils:

  • Mineral Oil

  • Parabens

Mineral oil, a common ingredient in many massage oils, is derived from crude oil and has been linked to various health issues, including cellular breakdown and potential carcinogenic effects. Parabens, used as preservatives, can mimic estrogen and disrupt hormonal balance.

For me it's always been Coconut oil! Coconut is classified as a fruit, specifically a drupe, rather than a true nut. This distinction is important for individuals with nut allergies which is the most important reason for using it plus my clients love the benefits!

Benefits of Using Coconut Oil in Massage

  • Moisturising Properties: Coconut oil is an excellent moisturiser, helping to hydrate and nourish the skin during massage.

  • Natural Anti-Inflammatory: It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe sore muscles and reduce swelling.

  • Antimicrobial Benefits: Coconut oil has natural antimicrobial properties, which can help prevent infections and promote skin health.

  • Nut Allergy Friendly: As mentioned, coconut is classified as a fruit, making it a safer option for individuals with nut allergies.

  • Easy to Absorb: Coconut oil is easily absorbed by the skin, providing a smooth glide during massage without leaving a greasy residue.

  • Rich in Fatty Acids: It contains medium-chain fatty acids that provide nourishment and can enhance skin elasticity.

  • Aromatherapy Benefits: The natural scent of coconut can promote relaxation and enhance the overall massage experience.

Returning to Nature as Our Greatest Guide

In a world increasingly saturated with synthetic chemicals, returning to nature for our health and well-being is paramount. Choosing organic, food-grade oils for massage not only enhances the therapeutic experience but also aligns with a holistic lifestyle that prioritises natural ingredients. By being mindful of what we put on our skin, we can promote healing, support our bodies, and connect more deeply with the natural world around us. Always remember: if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t use it on your skin.
